Many may not know but high fructose corn syrup is actually bad for our bodies and is one of the causes of America’s obesity epidemic and increases the risks of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

According to a biotechnology and molecular biology review on academic journals, high fructose corn syrup also known as HFCS is a liquid alternative sweetener to sucrose that is made of corn starch altered through a chemical enzymatic process started in the 1970s. In this process caustic soda and hydrochloric acid chemicals and amylase and glucoamylase enzymes to break down corn starch to corn syrup. Later on transforming glucose corn syrup to fructose.
